| Antique Iron Stone Soup Plate Decorated wih U.S. Postage Stamps This is a very unusual piece. I tried to research it wondering if it was a piece of tramp art or a popular hobby from the early 1900's. I really found no answers to my questions. I did find a facinating article from the new York Times 1893 that bears a strong resemblace to this piece. Read it at http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F70B11FD3E5A1A738DDDA00994D9415B8385F0D3 In any event this plate is in perfect condition (there are the typical stilt marks on the back...looks like surface imperfections but, are from the stilts used to hold the plate in the kiln as the glaze melts). The bowl is 8 3/4" across and is decorated with cancilled U.S. Postage stamps and gold paint. Most of the stamps have been cut into shapes to make the design more intricate.
